Advertising

If you want to make a complaint about an advertisement you think has breached the advertising standards, in any media (i.e. television, radio, or print), you can do so through the Advertising Standards Authority.

Broadcast media

If you wish to make a complaint about any programme on any television channel - TVNZ, TV3 and C4, Sky Television, Prime Television, and/or Maori Television - or you wish to make a complaint about any programme on any radio station, you can do so within 20 days of the programme being broadcast. Your complaint must explain how you believe the programme has breached the broadcasting standards and should be made in the first instance to the broadcaster. This includes newspapers and magazines. You can make a complaint to the editor of the publication within three months. If you are unhappy with their response you can make a complaint to the Press Council.

If you are concerned about internet safety or your personal information on the internet you can contact Netsafe or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

If you discover offensive material on any computer you use or you are aware of someone accessing offensive content, you can contact the Police immediately or the Censorship Compliance Office at the Department of Internal Affairs (see contact details for the Censorship Compliance Office under Film and Literature).
