Definitions

Stand-down
Stand-down means the formal removal of a student from a school for a specified period, by the principal of the school. Stand-downs of a particular student can total no more than five school days in a term or 10 school days in a year.. The student comes back to school after the stand-down period has been completed.

Suspension
Suspension is the formal removal of a student from school, by the principal, until the Board of Trustees decides whether the student should return to the school. The Board of Trustees must hold a suspension meeting within seven school days of the suspension, attended by the student, their parents/caregivers, student support person(s), the principal, and the Board. Following a suspension meeting, the Board may decide to lift the suspension without conditions, lift the suspension with 'reasonable' conditions, extend the suspension with 'reasonable' conditions for a 'reasonable' period, or, exclude or expel the student from the school.

Exclusion
Exclusion is the formal removal of a student under the age of 16 from a school. It is the responsibility of the principal to find a new school, or the Ministry of Education if the principal cannot.

Expulsion
Expulsion is the formal removal of a student over the age of 16. Neither the principal nor the Ministry of Education has a responsibility to find the student a new school. If the student wishes to continue schooling however, he or she can enrol in another school.
